How to Program a BMW Key Fob for Keyless Entry

BMW Key Fob Programming: Additional Keys

If you have a working key fob but wish to program additional keys, learn how to program a BMW key fob in a few simple steps below:

1. Unlock your vehicle with your working key fob. 
2. Take the working key fob and place it somewhere far away from your vehicle so that your BMW won’t pick up the frequency of the working key. 
3. Sit in the driver’s seat of your BMW. Locate the key markings on the side of your steering column. 
4. Place your new key fob on the key markings. With your other hand, start your vehicle. 
5. Your iDrive system will prompt you to select a new name for your key fob. 

Once you’ve followed these steps, you’re ready to hit the Westlake Village streets! The new key fob can now be used to save settings such as seat, steering wheel, and mirror positioning, as well as other driver preferences. 

BMW Key Fob Programming: Comfort Access

If you own a new BMW sedan or SUV with Comfort Access, BMW key fob programming is slightly more difficult. Unfortunately, if your BMW key battery dies or you lose a key fob, there is no way to program an aftermarket key fob to allow for all the features that come with Comfort Access. Instead, drivers will need to get a genuine OEM replacement fob pre-programmed for their specific vehicle, and the previous key fob’s access will need to be revoked. Only two BMW key fobs at a time can utilize Comfort Access, so keep your BMW key battery charged up and ready to roll for easy access on your Malibu trips.
