How To Jumpstart A Car

Before you can jumpstart your BMW, you’ll need to get a pair of jumper cables and another vehicle. Jumper cables can be found at most Los Angeles stores, whether you go to a big-box store, an automotive store, or even some larger gas stations. Once you have your jumper cables, park the working vehicle so it’s facing the front of the dead vehicle. Then, shut off the secondary vehicle and open the hoods of both vehicles.

With your supplies and vehicles in place, follow the steps below to jump start your BMW:

1. Locate the battery terminals on each engine. Remove any caps and clean the terminals of any dirt, mud, water, or corrosion before beginning. 
2. Take one of the red clamps and attach it to the positive terminal on the dead battery. This terminal may have a red cap or a plus sign ( + ) next to it.
3. Take the other red clamp and attach it to the positive terminal on the working battery.
4. Take the paired black clamp and attach it to the negative terminal on the working battery. This terminal may have a black cap or a negative sign ( – ) next to it. 
5. Take the final black clamp and attach it to an unpainted, metal surface on the BMW with the dead battery.
6. Start the vehicle with the working battery first, then start the vehicle with the dead battery. If the dead vehicle doesn’t start right away, wait for a minute or two before trying again.
7. With both vehicles started, carefully remove the jumper cables in the reverse order that you put them on.
8. Allow the newly-started vehicle to run for at least 10 minutes before shutting it off again. This allows the battery to charge so it will start again for you later.

Whenever you’re working with jumper cables and batteries, ensure that the metal tips on the jumper cable clamps never touch when they are on a live battery. These jumper cables are conducting live electricity, which could harm you if you come into contact with it.
