The 2023 BMW X5 is an extraordinarily well-rounded luxury midsize SUV, but for larger families or those who often need to transport cargo, the 2023 BMW X7 could be an even better fit. With that said, the smaller X5 offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain and a range-topping M configuration that some Los Angeles-area shoppers simply won’t be able to overlook. The basic contours of this matchup are very clear, but if you’re comparing the BMW X5 vs. X7, you really can’t go wrong either way!

BMW X5 vs. X7: Performance

Every Sport Activity Vehicle® that BMW manufactures can provide a thrilling drive through Westlake Village or Malibu, but there are a handful of important differences between these two models:

  • Both models come standard with inline six-cylinder engines, but the X7 outputs 40 more horsepower without any upgrades.
  • If you’re looking for the strongest SAV®, you’ll want to look at the upgrades for the X5. The X7 M60 has 523 hp, but the X5 M Competition is offered with up to 617 hp.
  • If you want to save on fuel, the X5 xDrive45e is your best option. Fuel economy is still TBA, but it’s sure to be much better than anything you can currently get with the X7. Plus, the xDrive45e offers 31 miles of all-electric range.

If you like the sound of owning a plug-in hybrid, an EV could also be a great choice! Our overview of the latest BMW iX reviews can help you get a sense of whether the brand’s new electric SAV® is right for you.

BMW X5 vs. X7: Size Comparison

The BMW X7 is unquestionably the larger of the two vehicles, but either model can work for a growing family. Here’s what you should keep in mind:

  • The BMW X5 offers seating for five as standard, but you can seat up to seven with the optional third row.
  • The optional third row in the BMW X5 is a bit of a tight squeeze when compared to the standard third row of seating that you’ll find in the X7. With that said, the extra seating in the X5 is suitable for younger and shorter passengers.
  • If cargo space is a concern, know that neither model will disappoint. The X5 offers 33.9 cubic feet with all five seats upright, or up to 72.3 cubic feet with the rear seats flat. The X7 has 12.8 cubic feet behind the third row, 48.6 cubic feet behind the second, or 90.4 cubic feet behind the first.
